Industry mourns Connecticut boatyard owner

Jarvis Stewart Barton, 91, died last Thursday while at Portland (Conn.) Boat Works, a place that family and friends describe as "his very favorite place on earth."

He purchased the yard on the Connecticut River after returning from World War II, where he served aboard the submarine USS Runner.

“Jarvis was a man of distinct character, ingenuity and rock-solid principle,” Tiara Yachts wrote in a post on Barton’s online obituary.

“Jarvis had more talent than anyone that I have met in this industry, bar none. When describing him to someone that did not know him, I would say, ‘He is so good, he can fix broken glass,’ ” posted Ron Milardo, owner of Cooper Capital Spec Salvage in Old Saybrook, Conn. “I knew him for 43 years and learned a lot about boats, but more about life and how to do things right.”
