Coast Guard rescues Giants fans in San Francisco Bay

Fans of the San Francisco Giants are known for taking advantage of their team's location on San Francisco Bay, gathering in McCovey Cove in hopes of retrieving a home run splashing over the wall.

Although the location is a good one, they come with their own risk.

The Coast Guard rescued three Giants fans early Thursday morning on San Francisco Bay after their boat ran out of gas and drifted into marshland near the Oakland Estuary.

Robert Pargaz said he and two friends took in the sights Wednesday night and watched the third game of the Giants’ series against the Colorado Rockies aboard an 18-foot boat.

“On the way back we ran out of gas, had to hop out and start pushing the boat,” but to no avail, Anthony Mandall told CBS News.

Finding themselves mired in the muck inside San Leandro Bay, the group called for help at around 3 a.m. A small Coast Guard vessel and a rescue boat from the Alameda Fire Department answered their distress call, authorities said. Soggy but unhurt, the boaters were taken to the Martin Luther King Jr. Regional Shoreline in Oakland.
