Lehr founder receives technology honor

Capt. Bernardo Herzer, founder of green technology research and development company Lehr, received an award as the 2012 Tech Awards Laureate from the Tech Museum.

Lehr was one of 12 global innovators recognized each year for applying technology to benefit humanity and spark global change, according to the company. The Tech Awards, a signature program of The Tech Museum, selected Lehr among hundreds of nominations worldwide.

Lehr received the Popular Mechanics 2012 Breakthrough Award earlier this year for creating the solution of powering small engines with propane instead of gasoline.

The Lehr 2.5- and 5.0-hp propane boat engines were the first of their kind. Lehr has now introduced a 9.9-hp propane boat engine.

The benefits of propane over gasoline include lower fuel costs, no gasoline polluting the water, no ethanol or fuel-related issues, zero evaporative emissions, easy starts (no choke), no priming, no carburetor gum-up and no winterizing.

“Gasoline is difficult to store and transport and the carbon monoxide fumes it produces can be harmful to boaters,” Herzer said in a statement.
