Fire destroys stored yachts in Australia

Fire investigators are examining the charred remains of at least 20 luxury cruisers that were destroyed Monday in a blaze at a storage shed south of Brisbane, Australia.

At least two boats were reduced to ashes after fire tore through part of the storage shed at the Horizon Shores marina, according to the Brisbane Times.

The multilevel storage shed housed 230 boats. At least 20 vessels in the shed were lost, the Department of Community Safety said.

‘‘Some you can barely recognize as a boat. They’re a pile of ashes,’’ Queensland Fire and Rescue Service duty manager Mick Torrens told the newspaper. ‘‘It’s been quite an intense fire and obviously with fiberglass and boats containing fuels, furnishing and timber they burn well.’’

Twenty-three crews battled the blaze and they contained the fire to the northeast corner of the shed, saving hundreds of boats.

‘‘We’ve been pretty lucky because it’s a huge shed,’’ Torrens said.

Firefighters were confronted with acrid, black smoke that could be seen billowing from the shed as far as 10 kilometers away. They removed as many as four damaged boats in order to extinguish the blaze.
