The Apprenticeshop, a school for traditional boatbuilding and seamanship in Rockland, Maine, is offering one of its apprentice-built Susan skiffs in a raffle.

The 11-foot, 7-inch Susan skiff, built of pine on oak with a cedar bottom and using traditional lapstrake construction, has a flat bottom and a transom-style stern. It seats as many as four people comfortably and weighs about 175 pounds.

In their first quarter as apprentices, Apprenticeshop students work on a Susan skiff to understand the basics of lapstrake construction. The boat being raffled, with a hull painted in deep burgundy, was made by first-year apprentices Matt Costa and Hobbs White and completed in the spring.

Full retail value of the skiff is $1,000.

Raffle tickets cost $10 and are available at The Apprenticeshop or by phone at (207) 594-1800.

The winner will be drawn on the evening of Aug. 12. The winner must be present in order to win.
