Genoa show numbers signal comeback for Italy’s boating industry

Organizers of the Genoa International Boat Show said this year’s event had an economic impact of $69.5 million (€60 million) for the city of Genoa and surrounding area. The show ran Sept. 10-30.

UCINA, Italy’s national marine trade association, said in a statement that the event attracted 174,160 visitors, 16 percent more than last year. Other indicators included more passenger arrivals at Genoa airport and about 1,000 VIP visitors arriving by car. About a third of total visitors came from outside Italy.

The food provider, Eataly, said it served 51,600 meals and 85,000 coffees during the show.

The boat show had 620 events, including ForumUCINA conferences, seminars, meetings and parties organized by exhibitors.

Organizers said that 7,607 press items were published in the run-up to the show, 19.9 percent in print, 21.4 percent on radio and 58.6 percent online.

UCINA said overall industry sales were up 12.8 percent to $4.5 billion (€3.88 billion) for 2017. As a result of the strong numbers, UCINA’s general council began discussing the possibility of organizing a brokerage show in the same location as the new-boat show.

Genoa maintains the highest regional economic output for the boating sector in Italy, according to the association.
