The seventh annual San Diego Yacht and Boat Show, produced by the Southern California Marine Association, is set for July 22-25 at the Sheraton Hotel & Marina and Cancer Survivors Park in Harbor Island.

Hundreds of new and brokerage motoryachts, sailboats and sportfishers will be on display. Free boating seminars, presented by industry experts on topics ranging from cruising tips to maintenance and repair to the latest technologies in marine electronics, will be offered.

July 23 is Boat Owner Appreciation Day at the show and all paid attendees are invited to an after-show boaters bash.

Sea Sense, the boating school, is offering a weeklong powerboating course Aug. 9-15 in the Pacific Northwest's San Juan Islands.

The seven-day, six-night liveaboard course departs from Anacortes, Wash., and offers students the chance to learn while cruising aboard a comfortable, fully-equipped 44-foot twin-engine trawler.

The trawler training curriculum includes boat handling in open water, close-quarters maneuvering, docking, anchoring, mooring, navigation, basic engine maintenance, line handling, knots, electronics, VHF radio, and man-overboard prevention and recovery. Students share the responsibility of planning the cruise itinerary by learning to chart each segment of the trip, with daily practice using charts and tools to plot waypoints and set compass headings.

The cost for the course is $3,495, which includes instruction, on-board accommodations, all mooring fees and provisioning for breakfast, lunches, snacks, beverages and some dinners.

The American Boat Builders & Repairers Association, in partnership with the Marine Systems Training Center, is offering a marine service management course Nov. 3-6 at the Marine Systems Training Center in Thomaston, Maine.

"We feel this course is the start of a great relationship between our two associations and a great opportunity for our members to have convenient access to high quality training," said Tuesdi Woodworth, director of Marine Systems Training Center, a program of the Maine Marine Trades Association.

ABBRA's marine service management class caters to professionals in boatyards and marine service and repair centers. ABBRA's instructors present participants with pointers in such non-technical topics as human-resource development, financial controls, customer relations, codes and standards, marketing and sales and more.

The course is also a prerequisite to obtain ABBRA's certified marine service manager designation.

The ABBRA member rate of $1,749 for this course is being extended to members of the Maine Marine Trades Association as part of this partnership. The fee for non-members is $2,249.

Attendees of the 2001 International Marina & Boatyard Conference, which runs Jan. 26-28, 2011, will have a chance to visit four Fort Lauderdale-area marinas as part of the event.

The field trip will meet in the lobby of the Hilton Fort Lauderdale Marina at 12:30 pm Jan. 26. It will conclude by dropping participants off at the Fort Lauderdale Convention Center for IMBC's regional networking welcome reception at approximately 5:45 pm.

The tour includes the Hilton Fort Lauderdale Marina, Bradford Marine, Billfish Marina and Las Olas Marina.

Registration will be available on IMBC's website beginning in September. The cost to attend is $65 for Association of Marine Industries members and $90 for non-members.
