Miami shows prepare for large turnout


The Progressive Insurance Miami International Boat Show and the Yacht & Brokerage Show in Miami Beach are expected to attract more than 110,000 visitors from around the world and bring big business to Florida and the recreational boating industry.

This year’s shows, which run concurrently Feb. 14-18 in Miami Beach, have added buzz in light of the National Marine Manufacturers Association’s announcement that recreational boat sales were up 10 percent in 2012 and are projected to rise another 5 to 10 percent in 2013.

The Progressive Insurance Miami International Boat Show, owned and produced by the NMMA, draws about a billion dollars to the region and employs 9,000 full time workers at the show’s three locations, NMMA vice president of boat shows Cathy Rick-Joule tells Soundings Trade Only.

“The last study we had commissioned was in 2005 and the impact was just shy of a billion, at $816.9 million,” Rick-Joule said. “We have commissioned a new economic impact study that will be complete this year.”

The Yacht & Brokerage Show, which is located on Collins Avenue, brings another $100 million-plus to the area, said Dane Graziano, chief operating officer of show owner and organizer Show Management.

“We hire 400 additional people every day to set up the show — and that’s just us,” Graziano told Trade Only.

Show Management issues about 10,000 work credentials each day of the show, which also includes exhibitors and the additional people they hire to help out at the show, Graziano said.

“I would guess that 50 percent of that 10,000 is not their staffing. They’re hiring people to come in and help them,” Graziano said.

Dealers and manufacturers have reported increased hiring and sales, another solid positive industry indicator, the NMMA announced.
