Newport show opens today in Rhode Island

The 45th annual Newport International Boat Show starts today in Newport (R.I.) Harbor for four days of events.

The 45th annual Newport International Boat Show starts today in Newport (R.I.) Harbor for four days of events, workshops and displays featuring boats, gear and accessories.

This year's event also features an array of new programs aimed at both experienced sailors and boating neophytes, according to the Providence Journal.

A program called "At the Helm," for example, will offer boating and water-safety classes for individuals and families. Show organizers are also offering "Newport for New Products," which is designed to showcase new and cutting-edge boats and equipment.

To celebrate the show's 45th anniversary, organizers will select 100 visitors to participate in a hunt for "an exquisite sapphire necklace, the gemstone associated with the month of September and the traditional 45th anniversary gift."

The hunt will take place on Sunday and require participants to receive clues using a dedicated mobile app.

Hours are: today through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. General admission on Friday, Saturday and Sunday is $15 in advance and $19 after today. VIP tickets are $35 in advance and include reserved parking at Easton's Beach. Children under 12 are admitted free on all four days. For more, visit
