Discover Sailing and the American Sailing Association teamed up to create a variety of hands-on learning clinics set to take place on the water at the 2012 Strictly Sail Pacific Boat Show, the West Coast’s largest all-sail boat show.
The show takes place April 12-15 at Jack London Square in Oakland, Calif.
This year’s expanded lineup of hands-on workshops and clinics includes something for everyone, from beginners to seasoned sailors. Participants will learn basic and intermediate skills through hands-on, on-the-water exercises taught by ASA-certified instructors.

For those looking to get on the water for a short cruise, stop by the Discover Sailing Center for a complimentary sail on the Bay. Participants are invited to sign up at the Discover Sailing Center for a complimentary 45-minute sail on the Bay with a licensed captain (included in the price of admission).
This four-day sailing event will feature hundreds of new sailboats, gear, accessories, hardware, seminars, interactive workshops, free sailboat rides and more.

The 30th annual Suncoast Boat Show will take place April 20-22 at Marina Jack in downtown Sarasota, Fla.
The Gulf Coast's leading boat dealers, such as Galati Yacht Sales, MarineMax Sarasota, Marine Dynamics, Sarasota Yacht & Ship and Cannons Marine, will display hundreds of boats from builders such as Sea Ray, Tiara, Viking, Cruisers, Grady-White, Boston Whaler, Everglades and Jupiter, along with a full range of marine electronics, products and accessories.
New to this year’s Suncoast Boat Show is MyBoatShow, the show’s new smart-phone app. Officially launched at the 2011 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, the free app, available on iPhone, iPad and Android platforms, is designed to help users navigate the show’s docks, land areas and tents.
Attendees will be able to access show maps and search for exhibitors, manufacturers, product categories and boats by specifications and size. The app, which is available for all Show Management-produced boat shows, also will provide the show schedule, parking information, food and drink locations, restroom locations and emergency services.
“We are looking forward to celebrating 30 years in Sarasota and are happy to report that the show is on track to sell out,” Show Management senior vice president and COO Dane Graziano said in a statement. “We’ve expanded the in-water display area to accommodate all the exhibitor requests we have been receiving, and we are expecting a very solid show this year.”

The largest collection of big yachts west of the Mississippi is returning to Newport Beach, Calif., for the 39th annual Newport Boat Show, which is set for April 19-22 at Lido Marina Village.
This year, show-goers can step aboard and compare the unique features of more than 200 pleasure boats, including brand-new models making their West Coast debuts and ocean-tested brokerage yachts that come pre-loaded with sought-after amenities.
The Newport show offers an opportunity to get an up-close-and-personal look at multimillion-dollar yachts, along with a wide selection of 35- to 65-foot pleasure craft, including sportfishers, long-range trawler yachts, sport yachts, family cruisers, sailboats and motoryachts.
In all, the show will feature more than 400,000 square feet of floating dock exhibits and boardwalk displays and a huge selection of boating accessories, electronics, gear and services.

A marine fire investigation course is being offered April 19-20 at the Middlesex County (N.J.) Fire Academy in Sayreville, N.J.
This is an advanced-level course, and prior training in basic fire investigation is recommended.
Participants will be attending marine/recreational boat-specific fire investigation training and will be participating in two days of hands-on training as part of a team approach to fire investigation.
Students will be divided into teams. Each team will be given the task of investigating one of the staged fires, determining the area of origin, ignition source, first fuel ignited, ignition sequence, fire/smoke spread and fire classification. Each team will prepare a short report of its findings, along with supporting documentation, to the general session for critique and analysis before seeing a video of the actual burn.
The culmination of the course will be a live boat burn and suppression exercise.

The 30th annual Bay Bridge Boat Show is set for April 19-22 in Stevensville, Md.
More than 200 new and brokerage boats of every size and style will be on display in the water and on land, including a wide range of watercraft from PWCs, inflatables and kayaks to fishing boats and more. A large selection of express cruisers, trawlers and cruising boats also will be in the water to tour and enjoy.

The Progressive Insurance Catawba Island Boat Show is set for May 4-6 in Port Clinton, Ohio.
The show will feature powerboats, cruisers, sailboats, fishing boats, pontoon boats and entertainment.
Among the highlights:
• Artist Ben Richmond retired this year after operating Richmond Galleries in Marblehead, Ohio, for more than 30 years. Boat show visitors, though, will have opportunities to purchase some of his last works each day.
• Musician and island regular Steve Brownell will provide entertainment each day, including songs from his recent Nashville album “No Matter What.”
• Free sailboat rides will be provided by Huron-based Harbor North.
• An antique boat display will be set up on land, with a variety of vintage craft from the North Coast Ohio Antique Boat Club.
• Most boats displayed in the water will be available for demos on Lake Erie.

The Marine Retailers Association of the Americas and Dominion Marine Media announced that the Boating Trades Association of Texas is the first regional or state trade group to sign on to host a Norman Spencer Marine Retail University event.
The event, scheduled for Oct. 21-22, will be held in San Antonio, Texas.
“We’re thrilled to be bringing an MRU event to our state and our members,” Rick Smith, president of the Texas trade group and Marine Outlet, said in a statement. “This is a great opportunity for us to provide a one-of-a-kind educational opportunity, and we’re particularly excited about the market-specific content that the MRU offers our members.”
The event will feature four targeted educational seminars, an expo hall and a series of networking opportunities. Sessions include: GE Commercial Distribution Finance will provide a session on economic trends and dealer performance; Statistical Surveys will offer detailed highlights into sales trends and market performance; and Dominion Marine Media will present best practices and advice about how to develop a market in today’s economy.
