Summer Sailstice starts today

Summer Sailstice, the worldwide sailing event that seeks to get as many people sailing as possible on the weekend closest to the Summer Solstice, begins today.

The annual Summer Sailstice is free to participants and has grown to nearly 5,000 boats today from 200 when John Arndt, publisher of Latitude 38, launched the initiative in 2001.

Joining with Sailors for the Sea, Summer Sailstice strives to inform and mobilize sailors, their families and communities to enjoy and conserve the beauty of the oceans while raising awareness of the effects people have on the fragile marine environment and wildlife.

From California to Aruba to Michigan, there are hundreds of sailing events around the world.
