Writers group hands out annual award

FORT LAUDERDALE - Freelance writer George Sass Sr. won the annual Sailing Yacht Legacy Writer's Award this morning at the Boating Writers International annual meeting at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show.

The award includes a $5,000 prize.

Sass' "Big Water Boats" was published in the annual Ocean Explorer Handbook and took second place in the Technical Writing category at BWI's annual writing awards presented at the Miami International Boat Show last February.

The article chronicles a family's cruise of the Great Loop, weaving together technical information with engaging human insight, according to the judges.

"If you're going to be a better writer in the boating industry, stand on more interesting boats, travel to more interesting places, and speak with more interesting people," Sass said in accepting the award. "Go have an adventure and write about it."
