This month we are taking a look at the sales by length in the top five states for the nine months up to Sept. 30, 2008. We have also shown the totals for the U.S. as a whole.

It will not come as a surprise to find Florida in the No. 1 spot in terms of the total number of boats sold in the period (3,985 or 20 percent) as well as volume in each of the five length categories surveyed.

Where the numbers get interesting is that 67 percent of Massachussetts sales are in boats less than 30 feet versus 34 percent of Florida’s total and 25 percent of California’s total. Forty-seven percent of California’s total sales are in the 30 foot to 39 foot category compared to Maryland’s 42 percent, New York’s 38 percent, while  Florida slips to fourth in this category with 35 percent.
