Data Tracker: Listing prices by private sellers

At the end of last year, we reported on the number of listings of boats for sale by their owners that had been placed on BoatTrader.com in the previous 12 months. Our goal was to see what we could learn about the type and pricing of boats for sale by their owners on a site such as Boat Trader. At the end of June, we took another look and narrowed the pricing categories for the lower-priced boats.

The accompanying table shows that the sweet spot for the more than 26,000 boats listed privately for sale on the site is between $10,000 and $40,000. BoatTrader.com draws millions of interested buyers, but there is a fee to list your boat for sale. Although there are loads of very low-priced boats that owners would love to sell, it’s apparent from this list that if the boat can’t be priced above $5,000 relatively few sellers will pay for the privilege.

At the other end of the price spectrum, where we’ve tracked changes from 2009 to 2010 and now again halfway through this year, there has been an incremental drop in the number of higher-priced boats listed. At the same time, in reviewing other data, we have seen a slight increase in the number of large boats listed for sale by owners on the site. This contrary finding may be a statistical anomaly or it could be a sign that owners are listing their boats at generally lower prices.
