Data Tracker: PWC searches take the lead

Six months ago we published the most common price ranges for the 10 most-searched boat types on BoatTrader.com for 2010. This month we did the same review for the first six months of 2011 and found that personal watercraft had become the leader.

In addition, PWC searches had increased from a median range of $3,000 to $9,000 to $5,000 to $15,000, a shift that covers pricing for most new PWC as well as old.

Because we’re comparing data from all of 2010 against January to June of this year, it’s likely that some of the changes in the search habits of BoatTrader’s 1.2 million to 1.9 million unique monthly visitors are attributable to seasonal effects. As an example, fishing fever might have helped bass boats move from the ninth-most-popular category searched last year to the second-most-popular this year. We’ll revisit the list again after the year ends and see whether that was the case.

Most of the price ranges that site visitors chose to search didn’t change significantly from one year to the next, and none of the price ranges recorded for the top 10 categories drifted lower by more than a small amount. Other than PWC, two other categories moved upward in price range: ski and wakeboard boats, which bumped up from $9,000-$25,000 to $10,000-$30,000; and high-performance boats, which moved up from $5,000-$35,000 to $10,000-$39,000.
