New England sales are outpacing other regions


The New England region stood alone in positive territory in February as retail sales increased 4.3 percent. The East North Central region continued to be the hardest-hit area again, with a 34.6 percent decline.


For the 12-month rolling time frame, the West North Central region posted the smallest contraction, dropping 19.2 percent. The New England region is leading the country in year-to-date growth with an increase of 18.6 percent.

Overall sales were down 24.5 percent for the first quarter of 2010. All comparisons are year-over-year looks. Since February is in the early part of a new year, quarterly and year-to-date numbers are the same. Regional results might fluctuate over time because some regions have fewer early reporting states than others.

Aside from the PWC and jetboat segments clearing out some product, February posted unremarkable retail activity. It will be interesting to see how market activity changes as we move into the primary selling season in the next six months.

This snapshot represents the entire fiberglass and aluminum markets, including PWC. These statistics include 28 early reporting states that represent approximately 67 percent of the national market. February represents 4 to 5 percent of total annual retail volume on a calendar-year basis.
