Two regions aside, June sales disappoint

Preliminary June sales data shows two regions with positive growth, but the entire market declined 8.8 percent for the month.

The East North Central region saw 27.3 percent year-over-year retail growth and the West North Central region reported a 6.9 percent increase.

The Pacific region continued to be the hardest-hit region again this month with a 42.9 percent decline. For the 12-month rolling time frame, the West North Central Region posted the smallest contraction, dropping 7.4 percent. The West North Central Region leads the country in year-to-date growth with an increase of 0.4 percent. Overall, 2010 sales are still trending down by 11.2 percent year-over-year for the first six months.

The rate of decline in June was tempered by growth in the aluminum markets. The pontoon segment was the shining light in June. The East North Central and West North Central regions were the two regions registering long-awaited growth. The market contraction appears to be slowing, but with consumer confidence continuing to plummet, expectations for the third quarter are expected to trend at a moderately negative pace.

These numbers represent the entire fiberglass and aluminum markets including personal watercraft. These statistics include 28 early reporting states, approximately 67 percent of the national market. June represents 16 to 17 percent of total annual retail volume on a calendar-year basis.
