Fire causes damage to Seattle-area marina

Two people were severely burned and 12 boats were damaged when a flash fire spread through a marina near Seattle.

Firefighters who responded to the Des Moines Marina about 15 miles south of Seattle told TV station KOMO that a woman and her boyfriend were in the bilge of their boat when there was a sudden flash fire or explosion. Both were taken to an area hospital with second- and third-degree burns.

The owners of the severely damaged boats were insured, the station reported, as was the marina. The 12 damaged power and sailboats ranged between 20 and 30 feet.

Boat owner Del Rivero told the station he saw flames shooting 60 feet through the roof at the marina. “It’s amazing how that fiberglass burned,” he said.

No damage estimate was immediately available.
