Illinois marina gearing up for National Marina Day

North Point Marina, in Winthrop Harbor, Ill., is planning a number of activities in celebration of National Marina Day Aug. 8.

"Now, more than ever, Americans need clean, safe and relaxing locations at which to spend their leisure time," harbormaster Roger Mellem said in a statement. "National Marina Day reminds our customers and our community that, after 20 years, North Point Marina remains a local, environmentally friendly destination serving as a gateway for family and friends to enjoy one of America's great natural resources, its waterways."

Scheduled activities include:

• activities for adults and children

• food and craft vendors

• ceremonies, including presentation of proclamations and awards

• entertainment, including a full score orchestra

• lighted parade of boats with the theme "Adventures on the High Seas"

• fireworks display

National Marina Day is celebrated in conjunction with the Association of Marina Industries.

Sales stagnate in March
