Mount Dora Boating Center in Florida has been creating spectacular light displays for nearly two decades, but this is the first year that tour boat companies around the state called to see when the lights would go on and for how long.

“This will be the 18th year we’ve lit the place up,” owner Joe Lewis told Trade Only Today. “It started with just the north wall of our high-dry building and grew to encompass the entire 2-acre property. Near as I can figure between all the buildings, lighted wire sculptures and trees, we’ve got over a million lights up.”

He jokes not to mention the power bill to his wife, but says it’s probably about $40 a night this year from Nov. 30 until Jan. 13.

There’s no telling how many people come from how far to see the display, he says.

“We see a few hundred each night and maybe up to a thousand on special events nights, like Light-Up Mount Dora and our Lighted Boat Parade,” Lewis told Trade Only. “It’s made us recognizable and memorable in the community. People will visit all year long, some making a special trip just to say thanks for the effort. If we could figure out a way to get them all on the water, we’d be golden! Still working on an angle.”
