West Marine opens 30,000-square-foot store in Jacksonville

West Marine recently opened its flagship store in Jacksonville, Fla.

According to the Jacksonville Business Journal, the 30,000-square-foot store will offer 16,000 national and local products, compared with about 7,000 to 8,000 products in the average store. The Jacksonville location also includes a 300-square-foot model flybridge and a model fishing shack, and has skylights designed to reduce the need for electricity.

In an earnings report released earlier this month, company president and CEO Geoff Eisenberg said despite the economic outlook, West Marine would go forward with its expansion plans.

"We at West Marine believe that the love of boats and boating will remain a truly significant part of life for millions," he said. "We remain confident that our long-term strategies, which range from the rollout of our new flagship prototype stores, to our renewed commitment to product development, to our focus on associate development, will position us well for the future."

West Marine, the largest specialty retailer of boating supplies and accessories, has 343 stores located in 38 states, Puerto Rico, Canada and a franchised store in Turkey.
