West Marine announced the grand opening of its first Massachusetts flagship store in Woburn April 28-May 1 with a weekend of special events planned.

This new store at 299 Mishawum Road has more than 23,000 square feet and was created to serve local residents and people traveling through to enjoy the lakes of New Hampshire all the way up to the coast of Maine.

Store manager Barbara Miele has been with West Marine for 13 years and is a powerboater who grew up on wooden boats and lives in nearby Burlington. Miele was recently named secretary of the Winter Hill Yacht Club and has been a material officer with the Coast Guard Auxiliary for 10 years.

The crew of 15 associates has more than 220 years of combined boating, sailing and fishing experience and has cruised more than 30,000 nautical miles. In addition to having fishing and sailing experts on staff, there will be a Port Supply Hub at this location run by Christina Greco, who has been with West Marine for 10 years.

"The entire staff of the Woburn West Marine is eager to serve the needs of boaters and anglers from Boston up to the New Hampshire and Maine coastlines," Miele said in a statement. "We are passionate about the incredible region we live in and will ensure the Woburn store is stocked with the best marine gear available to help our local customers, as well as those passing through who love nothing more than a great day on the water."

Among the local charities who will benefit from the "Cruising for a Cause" event April 28 are Courageous Sailing, Piers Park Sailing Center, The Fishing Academy, New England Disabled Sports and Cape Able Adventures.
