The South Carolina Marine Association will join with West Marine Aug. 13-15 to host the grand opening of the newest West Marine store in Mount Pleasant, S.C.

SCMA members will be on hand to explain what the association does, promote membership and conduct fundraising activities. For every membership sold that weekend, 20 percent will be donated to Anchors Away, a non-profit organization that uses water sports to empower people with mental and physical disabilities.

The SCMA will also run a silent auction ending at 1 p.m. Aug. 15.

"We felt that contributing to Anchors Away was a good fit for SCMA," association president Bob Pilcher said in a statement. "We're trying to grow boating participation and Anchors Away is trying to give people who might not have had the chance to have access to boating activities."

Other events taking place over the weekend include Fishin' Friday with local charterboat captains sharing tips and tricks on how to catch more fish; a fighting chair challenge; fishing and sailing seminars; demonstrations of the latest high tech electronics; displays of South Carolina-built boats like Scout, Key West, Sea Fox and Sea Hunt; solo sailor Brad Van Liew with Lazarus Racing and giveaways.
