West Marine sponsors cancer-screening event in Michigan

West Marine said it will sponsor the fifth annual Standup for the Cure on July 9 at Harbor Towne Beach in Muskegon, Mich.

West Marine said it will sponsor the fifth annual Standup for the Cure on July 9 at Harbor Towne Beach in Muskegon, Mich.

All proceeds from the day will benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation in Michigan. The company said participants in the popular stand-up paddleboarding event will have the opportunity to have fun on the water while helping save lives.

West Marine said it will have paddleboard specialists on site. Additional highlights include SUP races, live music, a silent auction, raffles, food and refreshments, and a free SUP jersey to all who attend.

There also will be doctors and nurses on site to conduct free breast cancer screenings. For every $125 raised for Komen Michigan, an uninsured local woman will receive a potentially life-saving breast exam, the company said.

West Marine will have its photo booth at the event. Attendees are encouraged to drop by, take a photo with fun props and upload it to their favorite social media accounts to enter for a chance to win a Surftech Touring SUP, valued at nearly $1,600.

“All of us at West Marine are impressed with the work that both Standup for the Cure and the Susan G. Komen Foundation are doing to help eradicate breast cancer,” West Marine senior marketing manager Laura Barry said in a statement. “It makes perfect sense to us to sponsor an event in the Michigan area that will help so many women in need.”

“For the past five years, Standup for the Cure has been raising money for early breast cancer detection, research, treatment, education and screening for breast cancer and melanoma on site while introducing hundreds to the healthy, active standup paddling lifestyle,” Standup for the Cure national events director Dan Van Dyck said. “We're stoked that West Marine shares our passion for saving lives!”
