2009 Everett Boat Show cancelled

The Northwest Marine Trade Association is suspending the Everett (Wash.) Boat Show, which was to be held the first weekend in March.

Of the 23 past exhibitors who participated in a survey, only four boat dealers indicated they would display at a 2009 Everett show, which is billed as “100,000 square feet of affordable, family-friendly trailerable boats.”

“As organizers of the Everett Boat Show, you never want to see an event go away,” said John Thorburn, NMTA director of communications and marketing. “NMTA has invested five years to build the Everett Boat Show brand. Boaters in the region have become familiar with the event, and it has been a good selling show for many of our boat dealers.

“The decision to suspend the show was reached after talking with those exhibitors who have supported the event in the past,” he added.

Organizers are looking at creating a parking-lot sale and calling it the Everett Boat Show Spring Sale. The event could take place in April or May.

“The Everett Boat Show is not being abandoned,” said Thorburn, “but the board and boat show committee is being realistic about what the space rental will be, based on everything that is occurring in our industry, and they are being responsible with association dollars.

“In the short term, we’ll focus on creating an event that serves the needs of our members in that region and then revisit offering a full-fledged boat show in 2010,” he said.
