ABA Celebrates 30 Years

The American Boatbuilders Association, formed in 1992 by a group of independent manufacturers looking to leverage economies of scale, is celebrating 30th year.

Founding members include Jim Lane of Chaparral Boats, Doug Smith of Baja Boats, Pack St. Clair of Cobalt Boats, Ed Atchley of Cobia Boats, Terry Bogart of Cruistar, Tom Trabue of Ebbtide Corp., Eddie Smith of Grady-White Boats, Charles Marshall of Monterey Boats, Duane Kuck of Regal Marine Industries, Kim Slocum of Rinker Boats, Victor Porter of Thunderbird/Formula, Al Fink of Stingray Boats and Leon Slikkers of S2 Yachts and Pursuit.

“As one of the founding members of the ABA, Monterey and Blackfin Boats have benefitted tremendously from our membership, as have all the ABA members,” Monterey/ Blackfin president and ABA board chair Robert Pita said in a statement.

When first established on Sept. 30, 1992, ABA’s initial objective was to buy engines together to improve their competitive edge. The efforts were expanded to buying raw materials, manufactured products, equipment and services while reducing costs and leveraging buying power.

“The ABA has achieved many successes in 30 years by helping members save costs from pooled purchasing, technical services and reduced transaction costs,” said ABA president Jay Patton.
