The American Sportfishing Association is urging interested parties to send a letter to the California Fish and Game Commission in support of Proposal 2-XA, which places marine protection areas in locations with a high level of conservation while still allowing anglers maximum access to fishing.

As California lawmakers move forward with the Marine Life Protection Act, boaters and anglers are urged to take action against the measure. According to the state's Department of Fish and Game, the MLPA directs the state to re-evaluate and redesign California's system of marine protected areas.

The concern for boaters and anglers is that this could lead to extensive ocean closures along California's more than 1,000 miles of coastline.

At its Aug. 5 meeting, the commission is scheduled to vote on which MPA proposal to adopt for the North Central Coast under the state's Marine Life Protection Act.

Currently, the commission is poised to adopt a preferred alternative that closes 13 percent of the North Coast Study region to recreational fishing. However, the Partnership for Sustainable Oceans, which represents the interests of recreational anglers and boaters, is supporting Proposal 2-XA for the North Central Coast.
