Bahamas Billfish Championship returns in May
The Bahamas Billfish Championship will return with four tournaments next year and a new marlin tournament is planned for Cuba.
The BBC dates are as follows: Guana Cay Championship, May 2-6; Nassau Championship, May 16-20; Harbour Island Championshp, May 29-June 3; and Cape Eleuthera Championship, June 13-17.
The new marlin tournament — the Gamefish Grande Championship — is slated for June 20-25 in Varadero and June 27-July 2 in Havana.
Varadero has more than 70 resorts and hotels on the peninsula. The base for tournament boats is the new Marina Gaviota, which is the biggest in the Caribbean with 1,160 slips, bigger than any marina on the U.S. East Coast.
During the second leg of the marlin tournament, anglers will fish the “Hemingway Mile” off Havana, where the legendary author and founder of the sport landed some of his record catches. Marina Hemingway will serve as the base; it is the location of Gamefish Grande partner the Hemingway International Yacht Club.
The marina and club are just a short cab ride from Havana’s spectacular downtown, whose sights and sounds make the Cuban capital one of the world’s most interesting places to visit.
The BBC was purchased last year by Active Interest Media, which owns Soundings Trade Only, among many other special-interest magazines.
The Cuba tournament is possible through AIM partnering with the Billfish Foundation, the Hemingway International Yacht Club and Marina Gaviota.
