Boat show postponed because of hurricane damage

The South West International Boat Show was postponed because of damage to the Kemah Boardwalk by Hurricane Ike.

Originally scheduled for Oct. 2-5, the show features more than 400 boats in the water and 200 more on shore at the Kemah Boardwalk Marina in Houston. The show producer is discussing potential new dates for the show with Kemah Boardwalk management.

Marion Daly, a spokesperson for the South West International Boat Show, told Soundings Trade Only this morning that much depends on how quickly the area can be cleaned up and damages repaired.

“The docks themselves were relatively unaffected. They held up very well,” she said. “Some areas within the marina sustained some damage, but the docks are perfect.”

However, Daly said there is a lot of debris that needs to be cleaned up, and the Kemah Boardwalk area suffered significant damage.

“They’ve got some stuff to do there, but I think the cleanup will go quickly once they get started,” she said.

Daly said show management will be contacting exhibitors as soon as new dates are selected. Also, regular updates will be posted at the show’s Web site.

In related news, the Coast Guard this morning reported that more than 90 percent of the buoys and ranges in the Houston Ship Channel were damaged or destroyed by Hurricane Ike. Cutters have been dispatched to Sector Field Office Galveston to begin repairs in an effort to reopen the port as quickly as possible.
