The National Association of State Boating Law Administrators established a new national Boating Education Standards Panel to begin work in 2011.
The 15-member panel - formulated to represent state, federal, non-profit, commercial and public stakeholder interests - will be named by the association's executive board from among candidates identified through an application process managed on the group's website.
The application process is open to all who are directly and materially affected by the standards, and participation is not conditional upon membership in the association or any other organization. Applications will be accepted year-round.
The deadline is May 15 to apply for a slot on the inaugural panel.
The panel will review the National Boating Education Standards on a five-year basis, beginning this year, with the most recently approved version of the standards forming the basis for the first review. An initial "call for proposed revisions" to the standards will be announced after the panel is organized.
"By including a public call for revisions shortly into the tenure of the new panel, as well as a public review of the revised standards document, we believe that we are increasing the likelihood that current, critical issues in the recreational boating safety community will be identified and addressed," association president Jim Graybeal said in a statement.
"We also believe that the open application process will result in a panel membership with diverse experiences and backgrounds - not dominated by any single interest - that will be reflected in the revisions of the standards," he added.
