Boating writers awards handed out

This year's Boating Writers International contest attracted 134 participants submitting 352 entries for a chance at the largest payout to date.

Writers submitted stories in 17 categories, vying for $17,000 in awards - the contest's largest payout with the debut of the "Original Online Content" category, according to BWI. Each of the categories was judged by four active marine journalists.

The awards were handed out at the Miami International Boat Show, and all winners move into a second phase of the competition, which culminates in a single selection honored with a "Grand Prize Writer's Award" and four-figure cash prize later this year.

In addition to cash awards, Certificates of Merit were presented to writers of another 35 articles.

Cruising World writers notched 16 awards (including Certificates of Merit). Click here for a complete list of winners from the Bonnier Marine Group.

BoatU.S. Magazine grabbed two first-place wins for the first time.
