Rives Potts is an accomplished bluewater sailor and general manager of Brewer Pilots Point Marina in Westbrook, Conn.

Like many other states, Connecticut is struggling with a budget deficit. Newly elected Gov. Dannel Malloy is proposing cuts and tax increases to balance the budget.

Malloy wants to end longtime sales tax exemptions on winter storage fees for boats, marine repair and maintenance and the value of a trade-in, and add a 3 percent luxury tax on boats selling for $100,000 and above.

Potts wrote an opinion piece that ran Saturday in the Hartford Courant, speaking out against the boat taxes.
