Calif. commission approves harbor-improvement funds

The California Boating and Waterways Commission recently approved nearly $6.4 million in grants and loans for the improvement of harbors.

The commission approved a $5.3 million loan to fund improvements to the San Francisco Marina’s West Harbor. It also approved the transfer of $500,000 in loan funds already approved in fiscal year 2006-2007 for the East Harbor to the West Harbor project.

The proposed improvement project includes the demolition of existing berths and construction of reconfigured berths in the West Harbor; the upgrading electrical and water dock utilities; the installation of new barrier-free access gangways with security gates; the construction of a new breakwater; the replacement of revetment; mole removal; dredging and improvement of buildings.

The commission approved a $340,000 grant to fund a study that will determine the feasibility of moving forward with the construction of a new Colusa boat-launching facility. The preliminary cost estimate for the entire project is $2.4 million.

The commission also approved a $732,000 grant for improvements to the Knights Landing boat launching facility in Yolo County on the Sacramento River.

Funding for approved projects is derived from the taxes paid by boaters on the purchase of vessel gasoline and the repayment of principal and interest on department-made loans.
