Changing Places

Sarasota Yacht and Ship Services Inc. named Gary C. Smith as its new president and Jason E. Mashke as executive vice president. Both are full partners within the organization.

Former president and partner Douglas C. Mashke Sr. relinquished his ownership position, but will continue in a sales capacity and as an advisor. A certified professional yacht broker, Douglas Mashke was president of SYSS for more than 23 years. Prior to founding the company, he was the owner/operator of a 200-slip marina, selling new and used boats.

Jason Mashke has been with SYSS since 2004. He is an avid scuba diver and holds several certifications including nitrox diver, divemaster, rescue diver and underwater naturalist.

"It has always been a dream of mine to carry on in the footsteps of my father by making boating a career," said the younger Mashke, also a certified professional yacht broker, in a statement.

Smith moved to Sarasota in 1999, and came on board with Sarasota Yacht and Ship shortly afterwards. Prior to that, he founded and operated one of the largest travel companies in Louisiana.

Smith serves as a board member of the Florida Yacht Brokers Association and the Certified Professional Yacht Broker advisory Council. He is a longtime boater, scuba diver and avid aircraft enthusiast. In the late 1990s, along with his family, Smith cruised in the Bahamas, the Eastern Caribbean and headed as far south as South America, spending more than a year cruising aboard the motoryacht Lady Alistina.
