Changing places

Scott Akerman joined WoodenBoat Publication’s advertising sales staff as the representative for the central territory for WoodenBoat and Professional BoatBuilder's Southern California-to-Louisiana regions.


Akerman was previously the New England ad sales manager for Waterway Guide and N'East magazines. He worked for The Boston Sailing Center and was named "Best of Boston" for sailing instruction. During his nine-year tenure, he managed the Lewis Wharf Marina and was actively involved in the repair and maintenance of its 60-boat fleet.

An avid racer, he has participated in many regattas on both coasts and in the Caribbean. He competed on the sailing team at Salve Regina College. In 2006 he sailed on the 78-foot Goshawk and finished second.

Akerman maintains a 100-ton Master Coast Guard license and has sailed 75,000 miles in 15 countries for several American executives. His first offshore assignment was in 1990 for the General Counsel of the Bacardi family in Bermuda on a J/40. He also taught navigation on the 150-foot schooner Ernestina.

Akerman has extensive experience on yachts manufactured by Oyster Marine of the United Kingdom and sailed 35,000 miles on 10 vessels.


Turning Point Propellers of Elk Grove Village, Ill., expanded its sales team with the addition of Ron Bailey as sales manager. He is responsible for all aluminum and stainless steel propeller lines as well as directing worldwide sales and marketing for the company.


Bailey was general product manager of the Valve line at Rain Bird Corp., a worldwide sales leader in irrigation products. In that position, he managed global sales, marketing, quality, production and new product development.

With more than 28 years of sales experience, Bailey has served in a variety of management positions. He was president of Cerebus Corp., executive vice president of sales and marketing at Tempo Products, director of sales and marketing at SeaLand Technology, and vice president at Hoffert Marine.

Bailey has a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from Western Michigan University. He obtained his MBA from Central Michigan University.


Navico, the Tulsa, Okla.-based marine electronics manufacturer, appointed Carsten Kipping chief financial officer. Kipping joined Navico in March as interim CFO and brings more than 10 years corporate finance, accounting, general management and consulting experience to the role.

As a member of Navico’s corporate executive committee, he will continue to drive the global finance function within Navico, with the support of the headquarters and regional finance teams.

“With his impressive financial skill set, natural curiosity to explore topics both on strategic and operational levels, and excellent collaboration with all internal and external stakeholders, Carsten has already made outstanding contributions to Navico’s performance during his short tenure,” said Jens-Thomas Pietralla, Navico president and CEO, in a statement.

Prior to joining Navico, Kipping ran his own consulting company focused on interim CFO roles and finance projects. He was CFO and a member of the managing board for Leybold Optics GmbH, a portfolio company of Swedish private equity EQT. He also spent six years with McKinsey & Co. in Germany and Brazil as engagement manager and senior associate, with a primary focus on the high-technology industry.

Kipping has an MBA from the WHU Koblenz School of Corporate Management in Germany, and participated in exchange programs at the University Paris-Dauphine, Paris, and the University of Michigan.
