Classic yacht regatta set for Rhode Island

The 33rd annual Museum of Yachting Classic Yacht Regatta will take place during the Labor Day weekend in Newport.

The event will draw a fleet of classics, with some nearly a century old, according to organizers.

The regatta includes two days of racing organized by Sail Newport on Saturday and Sunday. This regatta also stands as the finale of the three-event North American Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge, which also includes the Corinthian Classic Yacht Regatta in Marblehead, Mass., and the Opera House Cup Regatta in Nantucket, Mass.

Final awards for both the Museum of Yachting Classic Yacht Regatta and the N.A. Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge will be presented at a prize-giving ceremony and dinner that takes place Sunday evening at Fort Adams State Park.

The Classic Yacht Regatta is hosted by the Museum of Yachting. The Newport museum preserves the culture, history and heritage of yachting through exhibits, events and educational programming.

In 2007, the museum joined with the International Yacht Restoration School, a marine trades and technology school located across Newport Harbor; together the organizations create a rich educational living heritage experience by coordinating exhibits, events and restoration projects.
