European Union institutes new consumer-protection rules

The new European Union Consumer Rights Directive is now in effect, strengthening the position of customers who shop at boat shows, online or on the street.

The new rules also make it less costly for businesses to offer their products and services to consumers across borders.

The directive ensures that the EU-wide consumers have 14 days to change their mind and pull out of any online purchase or off-premises purchase, like a boat show, according to the National Marine Manufacturers Association.

Surcharges for the use of credit cards and hotlines, as well as premarked boxes on websites for charging additional payments —for example when buying plane tickets online— are also banned now.
