Family plans Ted Hood tribute

The family of Ted Hood scheduled a ceremony to honor the sailing and design icon who died June 28 at the age of 86.

In honor of Frederick E. “Ted” Hood (May 5, 1927-June 28, 2013), the Hood family cordially invites all he has touched to a celebration of his life to be held at New York Yacht Club–Harbour Court, Newport, R.I., on Friday, Sept. 20 at 11 a.m.,” the family said in a statement.

“Parking may be limited with overflow available on Wellington Ave., so we encourage carpooling where possible and suggest arriving early,” the statement continues. “All are welcome to stay for refreshments and to share stories following the service.”

From his early days as one of the top sailors in the country — leading up to being a winning America’s Cup skipper — to an innovative designer of sails, then sailboats, and then powerboats, “The Professor” left a long and distinguished mark on the nautical world.
