Fireworks blamed in Seattle fire that destroyed boats

While fireworks exploded in the air above Seattle’s Gas Works Park on Fourth of July evening, firefighters were battling a fire at a boat storage facility just down the street.

Seattle fire investigators say illegal fireworks are to blame for the fire, which destroyed 14 boats in dry rack storage and damaged four more.

Witnesses told KIRO-TV that a firework landed on the boat cover of a MasterCraft on the second level of the storage racks. Damage was estimated at $1.5 million.

About 250 boats are stored on the racks at Lake Union Skylaunch Marina.

“There was a lot of black smoke, then a lot of fire that never went out. Whenever they put it out, it came back with a vengeance,” one witness told King 5 News.
