Hurricane Fred forms in the Atlantic
Another hurricane has formed in the Atlantic, bringing to six the number of named storms so far this season.
Hurricane Fred is growing rapidly in the far eastern tropical Atlantic, the National Hurricane Center reports. The storm is located about 500 miles west-southwest of the southernmost Cape Verde islands.
Fred is moving toward the west-northwest at approximately 13 miles per hour, with maximum sustained winds near 105 miles per hour, currently making it a Category 2 hurricane.
Fred could become a major hurricane later today, with weakening expected to begin Thursday, according to the hurricane center.
