Hurricane Matthew, now a Category 2 storm, continues to intensify and will pose a threat to Jamaica, parts of Hispañola, eastern Cuba and the Bahamas early next week.
Its potential U.S. impact later next week remains unclear.
Matthew became the fifth hurricane of the 2016 Atlantic hurricane season early Thursday afternoon, according to The Weather Channel.
The storm was 130 miles northeast of Punta Gallinas, Colombia, this morning.
The Weather Channel said a Hurricane Hunters reconnaissance mission early today measured flight-level winds a few thousand feet above the sea of slightly more than 114 mph north of the eye, prompting the upgrade to Category 2.
Forecasters said Matthew will continue to strengthen and should become a major hurricane — a Category 3 — later today.
