Industry mourns longtime yacht broker

Richard Bischoff, 80, who had a long career in the marine industry as a yacht broker, died July 11 after complications from heart surgery.

“Dick” as he was affectionately known, began his career in 1961 and became a pioneer in selling and marketing larger yachts and sportfishing boats.

Working his way up from Travelift operator to salesman, Bischoff sold Pacemaker, Egg Harbor Yachts and Chris-Craft for Rex Marine in South Norwalk, Conn.

A native New Englander, Bischoff began his career at Rex Marine in 1961 and retired in 1995 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., where he spent most of his career.

“My father was an original — larger than life at 6 foot 8, but personable and liked by everyone,” Bischoff’s son, Nick, wrote in a remembrance. “Dick’s greatest legacy will not be defined by his career in the boat business, but by his eight children and his 21 grandchildren. When I look back at my father’s career I realize that his success was built on two simple principles — take care of the customer and do the job with integrity. Dad was my greatest fan, but he was also my biggest mentor — he will be missed.”
