Industry mourns New York marina owner

Frank R. Shumway Jr., 79, of Key Largo, Fla., who raced sailboats and owned Shumway Marine in Rochester, N.Y., died March 7 in Florida.

Shumway was a longtime resident of Rochester. He graduated from Princeton University, served as a jet pilot in the Air Force and worked in his father’s business, the Ritter Co.

In 1968, he and his wife, Shirley, built Shumway Marine. Shumway was an avid boater. He raced sailboats competitively for more than 50 years, organized world-renowned regattas, commissioned the design of the Ideal 18, enjoyed fishing and generally loved being on and close to the water. He was a past commodore of the Rochester Yacht Club, the Card Sound Sailing Club and the Ocean Reef Yacht Club.

Shumway also was involved with the Clayton Antique Boat Museum. He was an active investor in Rochester businesses, including the Strathallen Hotel, Woodcliff Hotel and Daisy Flower Mill. He served on the board of Rochester General Hospital and was involved in many community foundations as a generous philanthropist.

Shumway was born in New Rochelle, N.Y., and is survived by his wife of 53 years, Shirley Petrossi Shumway; his son, Frank Ritter Shumway III (Skip); daughter-in-law Dawn Gray Shumway; grandson Conner Shumway; brother Charlie (Faye) Shumway; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Mary Ellen Gaylord.
