Industry mourns Spencer C. Gowrie

Spencer C. Gowrie Jr., an avid sailor and former captain of the Thimble Island Ferry in Branford, Conn., died Aug 4. He was 90.

Gowrie was the father of Carter Gowrie, chairman and CEO of the Gowrie Group, a leading independent insurance agency that offers marine coverage.

Spencer Gowrie was past commodore of the Essex Yacht Club, past commodore of the Thimble Island Sailing Club, past commodore of the Card Sound Sailing Club and a member of the Off Soundings Club.

He served in the Army and was at the Battle of the Bulge during World War II, and ran his own insurance agency until he retired in 1986.
