Jobless rate grows to 8.1 percent

The Labor Department today announced that the unemployment rate rose to 8.1 percent last month, the highest level since December 1983.

U.S. employers shed 651,000 jobs in February, according to a Reuters news report. The report states that since December 2007, when the recession began, 4.4 million jobs have been lost, with more than half those losses in the last four months.
