The International Marina Institute, a subsidiary of the Association of Marina Industries, awarded its first Certified Marina Operator designation.

Responding to demands within the marina industry, IMI started the CMO program for managers who might not be eligible to apply for the Certified Marina Management designation because of the size of their facility or their job scope.

Rod Williams, marina manager at Middle Harbour Yacht Club in Australia, was the first to receive the designation.

"IMI recognizes that these managers make a great contribution to the landscape of the industry and they deserve their own certification," said Jim Frye, chair and president of the AMI, in a statement.

To qualify for the CMO, candidates must successfully complete the Intermediate Marina Management and Marina Operator Courses and have a minimum of three years marina experience in a facility with more than 50 slips and more than $500,000 in gross revenues.

The next courses are scheduled for Sept. 26, 2010, in Fort Lauderdale and Melbourne, Australia.
