Marine groups draft voluntary fuel standard

The National Marine Manufacturers Association and a U.S. team that included ABYC members and representatives of Mercury Marine and Brunswick were part of the International Council of Marine Industry Associations' Technical Committee in charge of creating an official international Boat Fuel Consumption Measurement Standard.

This voluntary standard is for use by members of marine industry associations around the world to meet the growing need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, according to the NMMA.

The standard will help boatbuilders provide information for consumers on using their boats in the most fuel-efficient way, the NMMA said. It was developed by taking a series of measurements on a variety of boats, from idle to full speed, to determine fuel consumption across the full range of the boats' expected operation.
