Marine journalist named to Homeland Security panel

Industry veteran Dean Travis Clarke was named to the Navigation Safety Advisory Council by Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano.

“I appreciate your willingness to serve on the committee. I know the department will benefit from your ideas and experience,” Napolitano writes in the notification letter.

The Navigation Safety Advisory Council is a 21-member advisory committee that provides advice and recommendations to the Homeland Security secretary via the Coast Guard commandant on such matters as the prevention of maritime collisions, groundings, rules of the road, navigation regulations and equipment and aids-to-navigation systems.

Clarke’s term expires Nov. 4, 2014. He also sits on the National Boating Safety Advisory Council and is in his second term.

Clarke has been a marine journalist for the last 22 years. He held the position of executive editor at Bonnier Corp. and World Publications for 18 years and contributed to Sport Fishing; Marlin; Fly-Fishing in Saltwaters; and Yachting magazines. He is the president of DTC Marine Multimedia, a multimedia content creator.

The Navigation Safety Advisory Council is scheduled to meet Nov. 28-29 in Tampa, Fla.
