Kingman Yacht Center in Cataumet, Mass., started the installation of 474 solar panels on the property in an effort to reduce the marina's electrical costs.

The panels will be mounted on the south-facing roof of each of the marina's large steel buildings and are expected to be active by the end of the year. In order to accommodate the extra weight, the roofs are being replaced and coated prior to the panel installation. The panels are estimated to last 25 years and the 99.54 kilowatt system will provide close to one-quarter of the marina's yearly electrical needs.

The cost of the project is being partially offset by grants and rebates offered through the state and federal government.
