Members of the Coalition for Reasonable and Fair Taxation — of which the National Marine Manufacturers Association is a member — met last Thursday to discuss scheduling and industry representation for negotiations surrounding the Business Activity Tax Simplification Act.

Last week's meeting focused on selecting a group of industry representatives that can be party to the negotiations, which will be overseen by House Judiciary committee chairman John Conyers, D-Mich., and a number of other House members from both parties.

Senior staff on the committee will be in the room at all times, as well as several members of Congress. The states will be afforded four representatives, as will the marine industry. Meetings will take place once per month, beginning in mid-August and running through early December.

NMMA has spent a lot of time on BATSA and says it has benefited from industry involvement. In June, Mark Ducharme, chief financial officer of Monterey Boats, testified before the House Judiciary Committee about the negative impact business activity taxes have had on his company. On Feb. 14, Stingray Boats' Barry Godwin testified before the House Small Business Committee on the same issue.
